When my mom used to stay over during Jamaine’s early weeks, she always sang two songs to put Jamaine to sleep: “Rainbow Connection” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
Recently, Jamaine’s trusty yaya took a day off and I had to ask Mama to come over to take care of Jamaine while I go to work. I also asked my younger brother Jervin to come over after school hours to keep Mama company and to lend an extra hand.
Jervin had saved an mp3 file of “Rainbow Connection” and played it on his cellphone. Upon hearing the first tunes, Jamaine stopped rolling to and fro in her crib and stood still to listen the song. It was as if she recalled the tune from her early days.
I found this cute video on Youtube of Kermit the Frog singing “Rainbow Connection.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thEiXbovv98Don’t you just feel a little bit dreamy and sleepy when you hear that song?I’ve actually memorized the lyrics and I sing it to Jamaine every night.
According to Wikipedia, “The Rainbow Connection” was performed by Kermit the Frog in “The Muppet Movie” in 1979 and it was nominated for Best Original Song.
Another beautiful rainbow song is “Over the Rainbow” featured in the movie “Wizard of Oz.” The song became so popular that it was “said to be Judy Garland’s signature song.”
But the best ever rendition of this song that I’ve seen so far is by six year old singer Connie Talbot, one of the finalists in the talent search show “Britain’s Got Talent.”
I almost cried when I watched this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=En0A8KGMgq8She’s just an amazing little girl! And though she lost the coveted title to opera singer Paul Potts, I’m sure Connie still has a lot of possibilities open for her. I admire her parents for supporting her dream and encouraging her to live her passion for singing.
I think Jamaine might love music because she really pays attention when she hears a song. Mama even said she heard Jamaine “follow along” with a song on TV. I think when she grows older, Jamaine will be a brilliant and amazing little girl just like Connie.
In the meantime, I’ll do the singing.
What’s your favorite happy song?
