I’m on sick leave again. I’ve been having coughs on and off for close to two weeks.
I didn’t really think it was something to worry about. The weather’s been crazy and other people in the office have been getting sick too. I actually managed to get well last week, only to get sick again after I reported for work. Our office is freezing cold and a lot of us are either coughing or wheezing. It’s not surprising really that none of us are getting well completely.
Still, I thought I could heal it again. I even broke my “no medicine” policy and drank some cough syrup to speed things up. But come Sunday, I coughed up some blood. Twice.
I looked it up online and saw a host of possible illnesses associated with it. Scary. But I was hoping it was only one of those milder ones: like my throat just got scratched and the blood probably just flowed out with the phlegm.
Still it was some cause for concern and I was asked to get a medical clearance.
I finally went to the hospital this morning to have a check up. I thought I only had to see the doctor, get some prescription meds, and have a clearance signed. And I could go to the office.
But the doctor was concerned about the bloody phlegm too and while she did not say it was something serious, she wanted to have some tests done on me just to be sure. So I spent the rest of the morning getting a skin test, two blood tests and an x-ray. Good thing I had Medicard and St. Luke’s was a top notch hospital. Everyone was helpful and courteous, the procedures were done quickly and efficiently.
After buying some meds, I went home to two squealing babies. They must have thought I was on some holiday and I could stay home the rest of the day. I just told them, Mommy’s a little sick and needs to stay home to rest and drink her medicine.
Of course, they didn’t quite get the “stay home to rest” part because they’ve been with me in the bedroom all day, jumping and playing and watching Dora the Explorer.
I’m a little bit worried about my backlog at work. It’s a good thing web and tech jobs can be done anywhere so I hope I can work a little bit even if I’m on leave. I planned on getting some work done when the kids took a nap but as it turned out, napping is not part of their plan today, at least not when Mommy is home.
Besides, I’ve been feeling a little woozy. Judging from the taste of the cough syrup the doctor prescribed, it seems strong enough to knock me down.
Anyway, Iya is starting to ride on my back and Jamaine is jumping on the bed. I should probably get going and just try to blog again tonight. If I manage to stay awake that is.
I’m gonna be okay.
