The magazine cover jumped right at me.
I was just browsing the magazine shelves to look for the latest Cosmo when this cartoon cover of Reader’s Digest caught my eye.
I browsed the headlines:
Secrets of Self-made Millionaires Revealed!
Recipe for a Sexy Marriage
Love Struck!
Interesting. I grabbed a copy fully convinced it was worth the P160 tag.
When I got home, I almost finished reading the magazine in one sitting. I got to thinking, how come I stopped buying this magazine?
I remember the last time I bought Reader’s Digest was when I was in highschool. I remember saving my allowance so I could buy a couple of back issues instead of just one current issue. I used to treasure those magazines and read each article carefully.
I loved reading the essays and articles because of the superb writing. I was impressed at how the writers seemed to magically make the stories come alive. I thought that if ever I become a writer, I want to have the same impact on my readers.
I even dreamed of publishing an article on Reader’s Digest one day.
At some point though, I got sidetracked by the bigger, glossier and cheaper beauty magazines and I eventually forgot about my fascination for that little digest.
It didn’t help that I chose not to be a writer by profession so I got more engrossed in TV and less in reading.
But now that I’m trying to write regularly again, I find myself being drawn to my old favorite magazine just to be inspired.
Who knows, one day, I might actually get to fulfill that dream of publishing an article on one (or maybe two or three) of its pages.
Besides, I want to raise Jamaine to have a reading habit so I might as well keep at it to set a good example.
I stock my bookshelf every now and then. I imagine I’ll be passing down all these books to Jamaine when she gets older.
For now though, I have to keep my books and magazines out of reach because she can only appreciate them as a source for munching paper.

hi jayme – i rediscovered reader’s digest here in germany, i am a loyal reader until. and yes, tama ka, itago mo muna yung mga books and mags from your baby; MC started chewing on my mini german english dictionary and now i am missing the D section, ahahaha
It’s weird how babies love paper, she seems to enjoy the taste pa nga… hehe…
I just wish that would translate to a deep interest in reading in the future.
Sa sobrang excited ko nga na maturuan siya magbasa, I bought her some board books para di niya makakain. She was able to tear it in the middle though. Nye…
hehe walang book ang safe sa mga babies. ako din like ate kengkay i am now more inclined to buy board books dahil until now she thinks books or anything with paper for that matter is meant for chewing or tearing. but you know what, i think kids can pick up after their parents when they see them doing something a lot, like reading books. mia does that sometimes when she sees me reading, she mimics me
so keep it up with jamaine!
