Jamaine and Kalia are watching Barbie’s Diamond Castle as Liana and Alexa are strumming their guitars and singing “Two Voices, One Song.”
They get their yellow and purple plastic guitars from the playroom and they start to sing along.
The song has ended and my girls want to do an encore. My big girl strums her guitar, cocks her ear to the side and strums again.
“Mommy, can you buy me another guitar?”
“That guitar is still working baby.”
“I mean a real guitar. For big kids.”
She must have noticed that the tune of her toy guitar was different. And I guess she thought if she got a real guitar it would sound the same in TV.
I’ve always thought knowing how to play a musical instrument is cool. I wanted to learn how to play the drum when I was in highschool. But it was mostly just a passing fancy. Besides no one in our family was actually musically inclined. Kernan once studied how to play the keyboard but he also didn’t push through.
So I’m still trying to see whether my girls’ interest in music is something that would last or if it’s just a fascination. They still have their taekwondo lessons and then of course, real school. I think it’s best they do it one at a time.
And while I won’t buy them an MTD Bass Guitar anytime soon, I’ll see if I can find a beginner guitar for kids that sounds close to the real thing. Who knows if I have rockstars in the making…
