On the road

June 3, 2010 in Travel

One of my dreams is to travel a lot with hubby and the kids. I imagine we’ll take road trips just like in the movies, sing songs the whole way and maybe have a countryside picnic.

For now, traveling on the road can be quite a challenge with young kids so we’re limiting our travels to anywhere reachable within two hours or less. We also make sure the car is travel – ready so that our ride will be a breeze.

Among our travel essentials are:

1. Lots and lots of Dora DVDs. These almost guarantee that the kids will stay quiet the whole ride. That’s why when Kernan switched vehicles, a good DVD player was on top of his car accessory list. We used to bring toys when they were smaller but they get bored easily.

2. Dance and Pop CDs. When they get tired of watching Dora, my girls switch to dancing and singing to while away the time. Their all time favorites are: Someday we’ll know, Don’t wanna miss a thing and I’m yours. Recently, they took a liking to Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance (because Jamaine saw Sarah Geronimo perform it) and Justin Bieber’s Baby.

3. Chocolates, cookies and chips. When all else fails, food is always a good distraction but it can be very, very messy. That’s where baby wipes and car floor mats come in. Finding  two-week old chips under a car seat is not very nice.

Most of the time, we get to our destination before we’ve exhausted all our resources. But in cases of severe traffic, a whole bag of patience sure comes in handy too. ;)

What do you bring when you travel with kids?
