how to look for a job

I’ve always believed that as long as you have unique skills and a positive mindset, you’ll always find a way to get a job or make money.

No matter what the economic situation is, your brain remains your best asset and your knowledge is something that the recession can never take away from you.

At the same time, having the confidence that you have valuable skills to offer and the optimism that someone, somewhere will need your services are crucial to receiving opportunities. Because if you don’t believe you deserve to get a job, then who will?

A radio interview financial expert Jean Chatzky did with career coach Susan Strayer gives some great tips about how to get the right job. Here are some of them:

  1. Make an inventory of your skills and discover what’s unique about you. Knowing what sets you apart from other people who have the same skill level gives you an edge when lining up among other applicants for a job interview.
  2. Determine what you want in a job. What kind of company do you want to work for? How much do you want to earn? Get clear about the job you want so that it will be the job you’ll get.
  3. Allot serious time for your job search and cut out on unnecessary habits. If you are online a lot, cut out some Youtube or Facebook time and head for job search engines. Lessen the DVD marathons and buckle down with the classifieds to look for job openings.
  4. Network with other people. Plugging in New York job search in Google will give you a hundred million results that could prove to be good opportunities. But getting a personal referral or recommendation from someone may be as, if not more, valuable to give you the exact job you need.
  5. Prepare for the big day — the job interview. Be knowledgeable about the company and the position you are applying for. Dress for success. Most importantly, anticipate the interview questions you may be asked. Think “Why should we hire you?” type of questions and arm yourself with ready answers.
