Fangirls at the New Moon premiere

You’ll know I’ve been really lazy busy when I post about New Moon this late.

But I think this experience is still too fun to pass unposted. A and I got to watch the New Moon Red Carpet Premiere at The Block last November 19.  (Thanks to Ms. Tina of SM Cinema!)

Just by looking at us, you’ll know right from the start we can morph into crazy fan girls because of Twilight. Before going in for the movie, we both swooned at the sight of Edward.

But after watching the movie, A had second thoughts…

A thinks si Jacob na lang

As for me, I don’t really have to choose. I’ve already got mine. ;)

Edward Jayme and Jacob

But I’d have to say, the part I enjoyed the most was watching the movie with my best pal.

We hardly get to spend time with each other lately but when we do, it’s always memorable.

I actually wrote my New Moon review for our news site. But here are some of my unedited thoughts about New Moon:

New Moon the Movie

  • New Moon is for Twi-hards and Twilight fans. Romantic non-Twilighters may be encouraged to watch the prequel and even read the series. If you’re not a fan, I won’t expect that you’ll like it.
  • Word of warning: If you don’t like the movie, just make sure to keep your mouth shut while watching unless you want to be barraged by a horde of passionate fans ready to defend Team Edward, Team Jacob, Bella and everything about the Twilight saga.
  • In the case of New Moon, compressing the 24 – chapter book into a two – hour film becomes an advantage because the movie felt more fast – paced and thrilling. I’d have to say that this time, the movie was better than the book.
  • Though I consider the book the most depressing part of the saga as Edward and Bella’s romance abruptly ends, it was good how director Chris Weitz summarized the changeover of months of Bella’s depression into the revolving 360 degree shot.
  • Another cool scene was the one with a painting of a scenario in Volterra smoothly panning into a flashback of the actual scene itself. Weitz is good with transitions.

Characters

  • Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s acting are okay, though they seemed more intense in Twilight. But they are still the perfect Edward and Bella for me.
  • Billy Burke plays the role of awesome dad to a T. I loved how he became a surprise hero in this film with endearing scenes when he was helping Bella deal with her nightmares.
  • Ashley Greene is so pretty. It was cool how she showed more of Alice’s quirky and charming side. Jackson Rathbone also made more of a mark here as he showed Jasper’s humorous side.
  • Bella’s human friends are so funny. Though it was only Mike and Angela who had more exposure, the other character’s brief appearances still provided comic relief just at the right timing.
  • Dakota Fanning was able to pull off the role the intimidating and mind-blowing role of Volturi vampire Jane flawlessly.
  • Taylor Lautner. Is. Hot.
  • After rumors that he was being replaced by a Fil – am hunk to play the buff Jacob in New Moon, I think Taylor really stepped up to the plate. He deserved his role big time.
  • It’s impressive how he transformed himself from a lanky awkward teenager in Twilight into a really hot hunk of a wolf man in New Moon. I still remember how a chorus of “Wooow…” spread throughout the theater when Jacob first took his top off to reveal his tightly sculpted abs.
  • The tougher, aggressive, more confident and sexier Jacob could pretty much sway a lot of Team Edward girls to join his pack. I almost did.

Fight or love?

  • I thought Edward would be sorely missed throughout the movie, since he was absent in most of the book, but Weitz found a way to inject Edward’s presence every now and then with holograph like visions that Bella has every time she is in danger. Way cool.
  • Jacob was a sure scene stealer with most of his topless scenes making you forget Edward was even gone. The rowdy wolf pack was also eye candy.
  • The movie was a rollercoaster of emotions, just when you start to feel the scene’s approaching a lull point, it picks  up with a quick punch line, a romantic moment or an action sequence.
  • One thing though: I couldn’t quite feel the passion in New Moon.
  • Catherine Hardwicke translated the blossoming Edward – Bella romance into film so well that fans went home swooning and returned to watch the movie at least twice.
  • There were noticeably more kissing scenes in New Moon but Weitz   falls just a little bit short of the intense passion that Twilight had.
  • What he did well was the stunning special effects and seamless fight sequences: wolf versus wolf, wolf versus vampire, and vampire versus vampire.
  • Despite a few down moments, New Moon still rises to an intense ending with a glimpse of the heightening rivalry between Edward and Jacob.
  • In the last scene, Edward’s final words to Bella abruptly cuts to black leaving you wanting for more and thirsting for the coming of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

After watching the movie, I was like: “I want to watch Eclipse. NOW!”

Good thing, Eclipse is showing on June 2010.

Just six months to go. ;)

forgive me for being a party pooper this early on. =) not a twilight fan kasi, although i watched it for curiosity’s sake and, ok, Jacob. hehe.

thing is, i really wasn’t thrilled about pattinson’s acting. it was so… uhm, how do i say constipated without being to harsh? =) i just feel that there wasn’t much acting there. parang pilit kasi mashado. and i’m rooting for jacob talaga, although i know already that’ll break my heart in the end. he just has more intensity.

and yeah, i agree with you that if you’re not a twilight fan, keep the comments (and snickering) to a minimum when watching in the movie house lest you risk serious physical injury. yung katabi ko yata ready na ako hampasin. hehe. but i think that was because everytime jacob came on screen i was gushing.

and like you, i’m curious how the next director is going to pull off the saga’s next 2 sequels without being too cheesy. parang ang far-fetched kasi nung idea how the 4th one ended.

yun lang, just my 2 cents’ worth =)

It’s okay Ris. I’m not the type of fan who wages war with non-fans who disagree with my opinion or criticize stuff I like. ;)

Actually, I’ve heard other people say Pattinson’s acting was blah. I guess I’m just more “forgiving” when it comes to him or Bella. Part of me thinks, the director could have something to do with it because I thought they were intense in Twilight. Even Edward’s seemingly cheesy lines didn’t sound as cheesy then. That’s when I first fell “in love” with Edward. Hehe…

As for Jacob, I think he acted way better because he had a lot more to prove. And he really did prove he’s got what it takes and more. Man, that kind of body means a whole lot of hard work.

I think Eclipse won’t be too hard. I really hope Weitz can bring out the intensity of that part of the saga. Breaking Dawn would mean some serious CG.

Anyway, no matter how the sequels turn out, I will still be a fan. ;)

Thank you for dropping by Ris!
