Classic beauty or modern chic?

I’ve always said that I don’t feel like much of a homemaker yet. But lately, I’ve been interested in interior design and home furniture, all in anticipation of our big move and, eventually, the construction of our own home.

I’m experiencing split personality though with all the designs I’ve been browsing. Part of me wants classic beautiful furniture while part of me veers toward modern chic stuff.

For example, take a look at these web finds I stumbled on recently.

A classic English chest of drawers or

a hot pink and black commode.

Hinkley lighting or

Old-fashioned bookcase made of books or

Console bookshelves.

Actually, I want the second choices more (the console bookshelves are my favorite! :) ) but I feel like they would be more appropriate for my own pink house rather than a family home.

Kernan says he wants the house to be simple, stylish and minimalist. I like stylish but I want a healthy dose of color and a little bit of flair.

Anyway, we still have a couple of years to plan our dream home. Maybe we could plan a house that has different themed rooms so we can satisfy each other’s style cravings.

What kind of home style do you prefer: classic and beautiful or modern and chic?

I want a mixture of classic and modern. Like the house be modern while the furnishing be classic or the other way around. Zen is in but how about having zen with colors :D

Hmm… zen with colors, I suppose that’s possible too. Pink and green, perhaps? ;)

I like both. I am starting to hoard home mags as we are going to furnish our little condo soon. With a lot of designs to choose from, I am constantly changing taste too :)

Wow, that sounds exciting! :) Does your hubby let you take complete control of everything? My hubby kasi lived alone for quite some time that’s why he wants a certain look for the house too. I’ll have to see how we can reconcile our tastes.

Decorating a home starts with the color scheme. The colors chosen should be complementary to the furnishings. When we decorated our home, I consulted a color psychology guide which showed the emotions and moods brought about by certain colors chosen.

BLUE: Blue is seen as trustworthy, dependable and committed. How the color blue effects us physically and mentally: * Calming and sedate, * Cooling, and * Aids intuition

Green: Green is considered the color of peace and ecology. How the color green effects us physically and mentally: * Soothing, * Relaxing mentally as well as physically, * Helps alleviate depression, nervousness and anxiety, and * Offers a sense of renewal, self-control and harmony

YELLOW: Yellow shines with optimism, enlightenment, and happiness. How the color yellow effects us mentally and physically: * Mentally stimulating, * Stimulates the nervous system, * Activates memory, and * Encourages communication

ORANGE: Orange radiates warmth and energy. How the color orange effects us mentally and physically: * Stimulates activity, * Stimulates appetite, and * Encourages socialization

RED: Red is inherently exciting and draws attention. How the color red effects us mentally and physically: * Increases enthusiasm, * Stimulates energy, * Encourages action and confidence, and * A sense of protection from fears and anxiety

PURPLE: Purple has a sense of mystic and royal quality, often well liked by very creative or eccentric types . How the color purple effects us mentally and physically: * Uplifting, * Calming to mind and nerves, * Offers a sense of spirituality, and * Encourages creativity

BROWN: Brown says stability, reliability, and approachability. How the color brown effects us physically and mentally: * Feeling of wholesomeness, * Stability, * Connection with the earth, and * Offers a sense orderliness

WHITE: White projects purity, cleanliness, and neutrality. How the color white effects us mentally and physically: * aids mental clarity, * encourages us to clear clutter or obstacles, * evokes purification of thoughts or actions, and * enables fresh beginnings

GRAY: Gray is timeless, practical, and solid. How the color gray effects us physically and mentally: * unsettling
* expectant

BLACK: Black is authoritative, powerful and sophisticated. How the color black effects us physically and mentally: * feeling inconspicious, * a restful emptiness, and * mysterious evoking a sense of potential and possibility.

Since the home is a reflection of the owner’s personality, choose the colors wisely and benefit from your home’s positive energy ;-)

Hi Sarah! Thank you for this informative comment. I’ll certainly keep these in mind when we start planning the themed rooms. :D
