Movies on constant replay in my DVD

I have a confession to make: When my hubby is not sleeping beside me on the bed, I cannot go to sleep.

So when he has to stay late at work or during boys’ night out, I pop my favorite movies in the DVD player and go on a replay movie marathon until he arrives.

I say replay because I love watching certain movies over and over until I almost memorize each scene. I love chick flicks, love stories, comedies and most movies that have happy endings. Sometimes I watch the occasional mind-wracking docu-type ones, but I rather like those that are easy on the eyes and brains especially when I just want to relax and be magically transported to dreamland.

So here are the top movies on my rack:

Serendipity

SerendipityAn all-time favorite for Kernie and me. As Sarah said in the movie, Serendipity is word that sounds nice for what it means, “a fortunate accident.”

I especially love the scene where Sarah enters her house and finds a giant gift box amid a shower of rose petals. If only that proposal scene was between her and Jonathan, then it would have been perfect. But of course, as the story goes, destiny wants them to realize that they are meant for each other much later. I also like the very artistic time lapse scenes and the dreamy musical score. The best thing about this movie is the theme song, “When You Know.” Kernan loves this song a lot that I actually sang it as a surprise for him during our wedding reception.

Other favorite Serendipity scenes and quotes:

Jonathan and Sarah had a date in the ice rink and Sarah asked him: “What’s your favorite New York moment?” Jonathan answers: “This one’s climbing the charts.” (Insert gushing sound here.)

The obituary that Jonathan’s friend Dean Kansky wrote for him: “Ultimately Jonathan concluded that if we are to live life in harmony with the universe, we must all possess a powerful faith in what the ancients used to call “fatum”, what we currently refer to as destiny.”

The Holiday

The Holiday movieThe Holiday movie
Watching “The Holiday” always makes me feel good. The movie doesn’t exactly start on a bright note for the two heroines: Iris (Kate Winslet) finds out that the greatest love of her life is getting married and Amanda (Cameron Diaz) discovers that her boyfriend has been unfaithful. As destiny would have it, Iris and Amanda meet online through a home exchange program. They switch houses and the story unfolds from there.I like Amanda’s character because she seemed to be a very confident and empowered woman. When she found out her man was sleeping around, she just gave him a good clobbering and that was over. I must say Cameron Diaz was perfect for this role.

Iris, on the other hand, was all wimpy and pathetic as she wallowed in the misery of unrequited love ( a common condition for most unfortunate women who allow themselves to be victimized by egotistic men.) But it was good that she redeemed herself in the end, slammed the door forever on her ex’s face and displayed some “gumption.”

Of course, we’d all rather be an Amanda but sometimes we can’t help but be an Iris. Eitherway both ladies still find love in the most unexpected ways and still live happily ever after. I know it’s just a movie but I always believe that there’s someone for everybody.

You must be one lucky girl if it’s someone as gorgeous as Jude Law but a sweet guy like Jack Black would be nice too.

My favorite Holiday scenes and quotes:

Iris has a dinner date with old screenwriter turned friend Arthur Abbot and Iris tells him of the sorry state of her love life. Arthur tells Iris, “In the movies we have leading ladies and we have the best friend. You, I can tell, are a leading lady, but for some reason you are behaving like the best friend.”

Amanda meets Graham for the first time and says “You know Graham, I just broke up with someone and considering you just showed up and you’re insanely good-looking and probably won’t remember me anyway… I’m thinking we should have sex… If you want.” Graham answers with that to-die-for gaze, “Is that a trick question?”

I always watch out for the scene where Amanda visits Graham and finally finds out that he is a widower with two daughters, I love the part when they all go in the girls’ bedroom and lie side by side inside their mini-tent. The two little girls were acting as if they wanted Amanda to be their mom. They were so endearing and cute.

I also like the scene where Iris finally has an epiphany about her unrequited love and pushes Jasper completely out of her life. If you’ve ever been a victim, you can a learn a thing or two from Iris’ speech:

“You broke my heart. And you acted like somehow it was my fault, my misunderstanding, and I was too in love with you to ever be mad at you, so I just punished myself! For years! But you waltzing in here on my lovely Christmas holiday, and telling me that you don’t want to lose me whilst you’re about to get married, somehow newly entitles me to say, it’s over. This - This twisted, toxic thing between us, is finally finished! I’m miraculously done being in love with you! Ha! I’ve got a life to start living.”

The Devil Wears Prada

The Devil Wears Prada
I love this movie simply because, once upon a time, I dreamed of becoming a writer for a fashion magazine. I have to admit it was this glamorous image that appealed to me then. Plus, I imagined that it would mean working in such a fashionable and carefree environment. But of course, I ended up working for television. It’s definitely unglamorous and unfashionable but very fulfilling.Anyway, I think Meryl Streep did a smashing acting job in this movie. After my friends and I watched this for the first time, we all couldn’t stop imitating how she said her favorite line, “That’s all.”I also like her speech after Andy laughed about the two belts being so similar in color. In her calm and nonchalant way, she explained how “this stuff” actually played an important part in determining the fashion choices even of those people who dare say they don’t care about fashion.

Anne’s acting was okay but I super love her clothes! I like the part when she was made over and showed those mean girls a thing or two. I even replay the sequence where she changes clothes one after the other just to take a closer look at her outfits.

My favorite TDWP quote:

Nigel sums up in one line the irony of a successful career, “Tell me when your life goes up in smoke, it means it’s time for a promotion.”

Should we called this LDS - Last DVD Syndrome? hahaha :D MY Best Friends Wedding used to be my LDS, then came the Chinese flicks Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The House of Fury and most of Stephen Chow movies.

Perhaps I’m Chinese film director in my past life :D

Haha… That’s a cute way to put it. Astig ang “Crouching Tiger.” But one Chinese movie I recently liked was “Memoirs of a Geisha” after I caught it on HBO. Might buy a DVD of it one of these days. :)

I ALWAYS have Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez, in my DVD player. Even though the movie doesn’t have a happy ending, it comforts me for some reason :/

Hi Alyssa! I kind of loved and hated Selena. Her success story was beautiful but the ending was just so painful. :(
