Rediscovering Reader’s Digest
The magazine cover jumped right at me.
I was just browsing the magazine shelves to look for the latest Cosmo when this cartoon cover of Reader’s Digest caught my eye.
I browsed the headlines:
Secrets of Self-made Millionaires Revealed!
Recipe for a Sexy Marriage
Love Struck!
Interesting. I grabbed a copy fully convinced it was worth the P160 tag.
When I got home, I almost finished reading the magazine in one sitting. I got to thinking, how come I stopped buying this magazine?
I remember the last time I bought Reader’s Digest was when I was in highschool. I remember saving my allowance so I could buy a couple of back issues instead of just one current issue. I used to treasure those magazines and read each article carefully.
I loved reading the essays and articles because of the superb writing. I was impressed at how the writers seemed to magically make the stories come alive. I thought that if ever I become a writer, I want to have the same impact on my readers.
I even dreamed of publishing an article on Reader’s Digest one day.
At some point though, I got sidetracked by the bigger, glossier and cheaper beauty magazines and I eventually forgot about my fascination for that little digest.
It didn’t help that I chose not to be a writer by profession so I got more engrossed in TV and less in reading.
But now that I’m trying to write regularly again, I find myself being drawn to my old favorite magazine just to be inspired.
Who knows, one day, I might actually get to fulfill that dream of publishing an article on one (or maybe two or three) of its pages.
Besides, I want to raise Jamaine to have a reading habit so I might as well keep at it to set a good example.
I stock my bookshelf every now and then. I imagine I’ll be passing down all these books to Jamaine when she gets older.
For now though, I have to keep my books and magazines out of reach because she can only appreciate them as a source for munching paper.

It’s weird how babies love paper, she seems to enjoy the taste pa nga… hehe…
I just wish that would translate to a deep interest in reading in the future.
Sa sobrang excited ko nga na maturuan siya magbasa, I bought her some board books para di niya makakain. She was able to tear it in the middle though. Nye…
